I believe we all crave stability, fulfillment, and a sense of belonging. We feel grounded when we have consistency in who we are, direction in where we’re going, and clarity on what it takes to get there.
But when life gets disrupted, it quickly feels chaotic. We can lose our sense of self just as fast.
No one is immune to life’s challenges. My wife experienced that reality firsthand.
When the Unexpected Happens
10 months ago, Annie went through an unexpected transition—her role was eliminated.
With only six months before our wedding, the timing couldn’t have felt worse.
She was devastated. The news came as a complete shock.
Her work mattered deeply to her. She gave four years of her life to that organization—and suddenly, it was over.
No one wants to experience the pain of being let go. For Annie, that pain was real. It led her to reflect deeply and question herself.
The Weight of Rejection
Still crushed, Annie wasted no time applying to open positions.
Despite a qualified résumé, the following weeks were met with rejection emails — or worse, no responses from seemingly promising positions.
In the midst of the disappointment, she did her best to be positive and maintain hope of finding a new job. However, weeks turned into months, and still nothing. The few hopeful interviews she did land, didn’t move past the second stage.
That silent panic wasn’t so quiet anymore.
Standing in Your Identity
Over time, Annie’s confidence and self-belief took a hit.
She began to question her worth—and that scared her.
Those months were filled with prayers, tears, and long nights.
Even when she felt incapable, unworthy, and not “good enough,” I saw something very different.
I saw someone intelligent. A detail-oriented problem solver. Someone with real potential.
I saw someone whose worth wasn’t defined by an employer.
I reminded her of the value she brought into people’s lives—both inside and outside of work.
Most importantly, I reminded her to believe in who she is—and who she’s becoming—even in the waiting.
Proof Positive
Ten months later, Annie landed the “perfect” role—one she’s uniquely suited for.
But she didn’t need the job offer to reclaim her worth.
That came from within.
It’s easy to magnify our insecurities when we face rejection—at work and in life.
But like Annie, we always have a choice.
We can refocus. Realign. Remember who we are and what we bring to the table.
We can choose belief—before proof..
Getting Back on the Path
Have you experienced rejection in an area of your life that had you doubt your capabilities, potential, or self-belief? You’re not alone — and this moment does not define your value. Don’t shrink your worth to fit a past environment or a termination notice. Setbacks don’t erase who you are or what you bring to the table. They simply invite you to remember it.
This week, step forward intentionally:
1️⃣ Reconnect with your inherent value
Take time to write down five strengths, qualities, or contributions you bring into the lives of others — completely independent of job titles or external validation. Read them daily and allow them to anchor your identity in truth rather than circumstance.
2️⃣ Move in alignment with belief
Choose one meaningful action that reflects confidence in who you are becoming — apply, reach out, create, learn, or pursue something you’ve been hesitating on. Don’t wait until you feel fully confident. Action is often what rebuilds belief.
